AMEA/AFSCME Local 16 New E-Board Members Taking the Oath of Office - Wednesday, January 6, 2016

AMEA/AFSCME Local 16 New E-Board Members Taking the Oath of Office
Benefits Update Letter - Thursday, November 5, 2015

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR AMEA/AFSCME LOCAL 16 MEMBERS REGARDING THE UPCOMING OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD FOR EMPLOYEE HEALTH INSURANCE FROM YOUR BARGAINING COMMITTEE

AMEA/AFSCME and the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) are currently in bargaining for a successor contract to the 2012-2014 contract.  We proposed to the MOA that we begin bargaining late August or early September.   Our first day of bargaining was October 14th.   This is when we learned of the changes to our health insurance premium amounts - too late to have an agreement in place prior to the November Health Insurance Open Enrollment Period.   To simply say that we are frustrated over this situation is putting it lightly.  Let us assure you that the importance of Health Care to our members is at the forefront of every decision we make.

The language changed in the 2014/2016 contract from the longstanding practice that the parties shared a 60/40 split of any premium increases to a set amount that the MOA paid tied to the Anchorage CPI.  Please know that we are actively bargaining for an agreement in which our members pay no more than their fair share of premium increases, however we are unable to provide specifics regarding as to what is happening at the bargaining table.

Historically the contract provided for a 60/40 split of any increases in the premium amount so our members would know exactly how much they would be paying for the next year’s premium when they made their selection during the open enrollment period.  This is not the case this year.  The total cost of your health insurance premium is going to go up and you will have to make a decision on which plan best fits your family needs by November 20th.  We regret that AMEA/AFSCME is in this position and are working diligently at the bargaining table to make sure our members are not put in this positon in the future.

Our bargaining committee will be available to discuss this dilemma further but please respect the bargaining process and know that we are unable to provide specifics regarding proposals at this time.

In solidarity,

Your Bargaining Team:
Dana Norris
Renee Aguliar
Kim Winston
Nate Howes
Chiquita Cothron
